EXCERPT:

As the man clings to Peter and John,a big crowd assembles in Solomon’s Porch. This is an example of the effect of what we commonly call power evangelism. Evangelism coupled with the power of the Holy Spirit, evangelism with signs and wonders, is especially powerful. Signs and wonders do not preach the Gospel; someone still has to convey the message of life in Christ. But signs and wonders do several important things: (1) they get people’s attention; (2) they testify of the goodness of God in general; (3) and they testify, as in this case, of the power that God has placed in the Name of Jesus.

So, we seek as much as possible to not only share Christ in word, but in the power of the Spirit. This was the pattern in the Gospel when Jesus sent out first the Twelve and then the Seventy. Jesus said, “And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons’” (Matthew 10:7-8a).

And remember, of course, the theme verse for the entire Book of Acts, Acts 1:8: “You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be my witnesses…”
